Bridging the gap

A Guide to Cross-Generational Conversation

Addressing Mental Health, Identity and Social Justice

Developed by Make Noise Today x Youth Against Hate, 2022.

01.

The Issue.

Starting with the Black Lives Matter movement in 2019, our society, especially those in Gen-Z, have entered a new age of development where our world is becoming more and more diverse, culturally aware, and conscious of our flaws and the progress we still need to make. However, we have seen an increasing gap exist between generations, specifically Gen-Z and their Baby Boomer // Early Millenial parents.

02.

This is a Gap that Breaks Us Apart.

When parents and their children cannot bridge this gap between them and hold conversations about current topics and issues, especially when they are a foundational part of the child's identity, it makes home, the place that should be the warmest, an uncomfortable and mentally unsafe environment to live in.

How do we solve it?

First, we need to find a way to bring the voices of youth to their parents.

We have to be unafraid to strike up these conversations and expose the greater community to our progressive needs and identities via easily accessible, inclusive, and versatile resources.

Here's what we came up with:

Resources to Bridge the Gap

To start cross-generational conversation, our team at Make Noise Today and Youth Against Hate have worked to create a list of resources that approach "taboo" topics in a non-confrontational, honest and meticulously thought-out format that will slowly and carefully bring parent-child relationships out of their comfort zones into a freer, more open space where they can accept and grow to love each other's identities for all that they are.
